Receivers and pressure drop: why air fails to reach the tool

Pressure at the compressor outlet can differ from pressure at an operating consumer. Diagnosis requires measurements at several points under load.

Check air distribution

Record pressure at the compressor, after treatment and before the consumer while the problem occurs. Note filter condition, restrictions, hose length and simultaneous use. The location of pressure loss guides investigation but does not replace network calculations.

A receiver provides a buffer

A receiver stores air for limited-duration demand. It does not add continuous compressor capacity. Sizing depends on allowable pressure band, peak duration, flow and control logic. Motor power alone cannot reliably determine the required volume.

Do not mask an unknown cause by raising the setpoint

Raising system pressure without identifying the cause may hide a local network problem. Find where and under which duty pressure becomes inadequate, then compare piping changes, local storage, maintenance and station control. The vessel requires documentation, an allowable pressure rating and compliance with applicable operating rules.

What to prepare

  • Pressure at several points under load
  • Peak duration and repetition
  • Flow capacity of restricted sections
  • Receiver datasheet and allowable pressure
  • Condensate drain operation
